Thuya Gardens

On the top of a ridge that overlooks Northeast Harbor, Maine is a garden begun as an orchard in 1916.  It has been shepherded over the years and now boasts one of the loveliest perennial gardens anywhere.

Charlotte Rhoades Butterfly Park

In Southwest Harbor, Maine there is a small garden totally devoted to helping butterflies survive.  It is-quite frankly-a thing of beauty.

Park Loop Ride and 22nd Anniversary

Kathie and I celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary by riding a 15 mile road that loops around Acadia NP.  the road was built by Rockefeller because of pressure from people who wanted to drive through the park (at that time, no autos were allowed).

Bubble Rock

In Acadia, a place carved by glaciers, there are numbers of wonders: lakes, ponds, tarns, mountains, creeks, valleys......all near the ocean.  All these things in close proximity make it a remarkably beautiful place.

Today, Kathie and I hiked to another Acadia anomoly: a glacial "erratic" called Bubble Rock.

The rock is a 5 or 6 ton bolder that is perched precariously on the edge of a mountain top.  It was left there after the glacier receded.

Now it looks like some jokester hot glued it to the side of a hill-it sticks out like a sore thumb and can be seen easily from the base of the mountain.

Cadillac Climb and Carriage Roads

OK-I had to try Cadillac Mountain again-this time when the sun was shining.  It was a spectacular climb with incredible views over the mountains and ocean...as you can see.

Kathie and I took a ride on the Acadia Carriage Roads later.  These are roads designed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and designed for a horse drawn carriage  The roads were layed out for the best views of Mount Desert Island.

We rode from Eagle Lake to Jordan Pond, had popovers at the restaurant, and completed a 12 mile loop home.
